Write a rule for email links

Send email links for one address, or for every address at one domain, to a mail app or a webmail site. The rule editor builds the match from an example email link.

1. Open the rule editor. Go to Settings > Rules and click +, or click Create Rule from ”…” in the menu bar.
2. Enter an email link in Example link:, for example mailto:someone@example.com. Three suggestions appear under When….
3. Select the suggestion you want.
4. Choose a mail app or a webmail entry under Send with…. If you chose webmail, choose a browser and a profile under Open in:.
5. Click Save Rule.

What each suggestion means

The suggestions below are for the example link mailto:someone@example.com.

Suggestion	What it matches
Emails to @example.com	Every address at that domain. Selected by default.
Emails to someone@example.com	Only that one address.
Any email address	Every email link.

The Send with… menu lists the same mail apps and webmail entries as the fallback email client. See Choose a fallback email client.

The summary card reads the rule back to you. It says “will send with” instead of “will open in”. For Any email address it starts with All emails.

Caution

A rule that matches any link does not catch email links. Email links only match rules made from an email link. Without one, they go to the fallback email client.

What carries over

An email link can carry a to address, cc, bcc, a subject, and a body. A mail app receives the whole link. A webmail site receives the parts it supports. Empty parts are left out.

Every webmail site receives to, subject, and body. Outlook and Proton Mail drop cc and bcc.
